Our original LAX VOX® tubing is made of high-quality, pollutant-free medical silicone. This is used in medicine for short-term implants, among other things, and can remain in the body for up to seven days. It produces neither by-products nor decomposition products.

This may vary by brand of thickener, but in general if you're using thickened liquids, "nectar" consistency works fine. "Honey" is a bit harder to suck through the straw, but it does work.
