This may vary by brand of thickener, but in general if you're using thickened liquids, "nectar" consistency works fine. "Honey" is a bit harder to suck through the straw, but it does work. Jaw grading is the ability to have controlled movements of the jaw to various jaw heights needed for speech and feeding skills. For example, note the difference in your jaw when saying “eee” vs “ahhh”. Or, imagine biting into a cracker vs a sandwich/burger. Your jaw has to open to different heights to accommodate those different sounds and foods. ARK's Bite Tube is a hollow chew tool with a different diameter on each end.Use it as a safe alternative for anyone who needs to chew. They can also be used as an oral motor tool to work on jaw strength and stability. The tube-like extension is perfect for individuals who want their chew tool to "collapse" more, whether as a sensory chew and/or in feeding therapy. As an oral motor tool, use it to practice biting/chewing skills without the risk of choking, to build jaw strength and stability, and to exercise the mouth muscles.Put puréed foods inside the tube for functional biting/chewing practice - when the individual bites down, they will be rewarded with a taste of food. The two different diameters allow you to work on varying jaw heights. It's also an excellent way to incorporate real food as you practice the motor planning of eating skills. The Bite Tube Tip comes in two different versions: smooth (lavender) or textured (blue). For individuals with oral defensiveness, start with the smooth tip and gradually progress to the textured one.
